New COVID-19 data out Wednesday was welcome news to Fresno County which stays in the ‘red’ tier for reopening.
This means restaurants, churches and other businesses can continue to offer limited indoor services.
Fresno County currently has a 5.1% test positivity rate (up from 5.1% last week), and 6.1 cases per 100,000 residents (down from 6.7 last week). To stay in its current red tier, Fresno County numbers need to continue to have less than an 8% test positivity rate and reduce new cases per 100,000 residents to less than 7 over the next week.
The state’s required “health equity” positivity rate is at 7.4% (up from 6.8% last week). Fresno County needs to remain below 8% to in this measurement remain in the red tier. The purpose of this metric is to ensure California reopens its economy safely by reducing disease transmission in all communities.

Madera County Remains in Purple – For Now
Madera County remains in the ‘purple’ tier, but could potentially move into ‘red’ next week.
According to a press release from the county, based upon the rules set by the state, if the test positivity rates in the overall county (below 5%) and in the most disadvantaged areas (below 5.2%) remain in the orange tier for one additional week, Madera County can move forward to the red tier, regardless of the case rate.
Here are the county’s current COVID-19 numbers:
- The unadjusted and adjusted case rate are in the purple tier:
- The unadjusted case rate is 7.3 per 100,000 and the adjusted case rate is 7.5 per 100,000.
- Madera County’s positivity rate has improved and meets the criteria for the orange tier:
- The test positivity rate for the overall county (4.2% ) and test positivity rate in the most disadvantaged areas of the county (4.8% ) both meet the criteria for the orange tier.
